The Gaming Renaissance- LA Noire.

Rockstar games is one of the most recognizable names in gaming. Rockstar has caused a whole lot of trouble in it’s day, with parents and eventually retailers. The only people that really never seem upset with Rockstar are the gamers. They know how to create worlds that you can fall into, and beat as many hookers to death as you want. I personally thought Rockstar couldn’t do anything but put some story into a massive game world, where anarchy was the star.

LA Noire proves that Rockstar is going to usher in a new generation of gaming. I can honestly say that LA Noire plays great homage to Film Noire, there is even a black and white mode! In LA Noire you play Cole Phelps, a veteran from WWII who joined the LAPD. The game revolves around investigation, and solving cases, and there are side missions that come in the form of APB’s on your police radio.

The story in LA Noire is amazing. You are put into an extremely realistic and engrossing world, but you see it through the eyes of Cole Phelps. While in games like Grand Theft Auto, you can do what ever you want and you have access to a million different weapons LA Noire is completely story driven. You can’t even pull out your gun unless the story calls for it. The player really feels they are taking on the role of Cole Phelps, especially with the addition of things like the small conversations Cole has with his partner.

Rockstar was so dedicated to recreating Film Noire, they pretty much eliminated the need for a UI. The use of musical ques in LA Noire has to be the best in gaming so far. In fact, I don’t think musical ques can be used any better. When you need to find clues the music change instead of a message coming up across the screen, the music even has a specific way it ends when you find all the clues. While investigating, anytime you are close to something you can observe there is a chime that prompts you that there is something close. These make up an kind of auditory user interface that adds to the game play experience by keeping you engrossed in the game world.

With cutting edge game play, and an amazing story there is no questions that LA Noire will go down in history as a modern masterpiece of gaming. With LA Noire Rockstar is ushering in The Gaming Renaissance. After Seeing how successful LA Noire is other studios will challenge gaming logic, game design standards and best of all players.
